Lost in the silence of an empty road, finding peace in the pause

Writer: Jiri KolarJiri Kolar

There is something hauntingly beautiful about an empty motorway. A place built for movement, for the rush of engines and the blur of headlights, suddenly frozen in time. It’s an opportunity most photographers never get—a fleeting moment when the world slows down, and the road, usually untouchable, becomes a stage.

Last weekend, my model and I found ourselves standing in the middle of that silence, where asphalt meets the horizon, the usual chaos of traffic replaced by an eerie calm. The motorway had been shut down for major service, a temporary pause in its endless journey. And for us, it was a call we couldn’t ignore.

We knew it was risky. The unpredictability of such a vast, open space, the weight of its usual purpose still lingering in the air—it was exhilarating and unsettling in equal measure. But photography is about capturing the extraordinary in the everyday, and this was as extraordinary as it gets.

Dressed in ripped denim, sneakers, and a leather jacket, my model embodied the spirit of rebellion, of owning a moment that shouldn’t exist. She sat on the cold asphalt, traced the faded white lines with her fingertips, and walked with an air of defiance—unapologetically claiming a space never meant for stillness. The overcast sky cast a moody palette over the scene, adding depth to the solitude of it all.

This was more than a photoshoot; it was a dance with the unexpected, a testament to what happens when you seize the rare moments life throws your way. When the road stands still, when the world gives you an empty stage—do you hesitate, or do you step forward and create something unforgettable?

For us, the answer was clear.

Jiri.
